GMG Radio who own popular brands such as Smooth, Real and Rock Radio have launched an on-demand service that allows users of the music-streaming service ‘We7′ to check out their radio stations.

We7 users can now listen to a mix of around 60-70 songs that they are likely to come across on GMG’s collection of radio stations with no ads! (although short jingles and promos do feature). We7 claim to have three million users per month which GMG Radio are hoping to tap into with this deal.

Steve Purdham, chief executive of We7, said: “The power of great radio stations such as Smooth is its music ‘DNA’ and its personalities. Digital solutions have a long way to go to deliver that heritage. But digital radio is more than broadcasting what is being played now, with personalisation and portability becoming important. This way, digital audiences get the best of all worlds – the convenience of cloud-based music access and the passion of music from people who understand what audiences like.”

Jazz FM, which had previously been limited to only London, the North West and West Midlands on DAB, has now launched nationally. Jazz FM originally launched in 1990 as a station for London before being re-launched as a digital-only station in October 2008 under the Guardian Media Group.

This change is another in a series that began with the restructuring of its sales team with Jo Coltman being promoted from Head of Client Development to director of sales and the appointment of Yoel Kenan as the station’s first Managing Director.

Kenan said: “These are exciting times for Jazz FM as we expand our audience and the way they connect with the station. We have restructured our sales department under the leadership of Jo Coltman to assist our advertisers and brands in implementing a range of services so they can engage with our distinctive audience.”

Bauer Media’s London-based Magic 105.4 has signed BT to become the sponsor of Magic Summer Live, a new live event that will feature an exclusive appearance from Elton John. This new deal is an extension of a partnership between BT and Magic trying to focus on the ‘journey’ to the London 2012 Olympics with BT being a tier-one sponsor of the games.

The live event will be a concert and the first outdoor ticketed event from the Magic 105.4 team, with similarities drawn to Global Radio’s Summertime Ball. The activity will include on-air coverage as well as online presence on Magic.co.uk.

BT’s spokesperson said of the deal: “Magic 105.4, London’s number-one music station, is the perfect vehicle, with its 2.1 million listeners and the thousands of people expected at Magic Summer Live.”

Gaydar Radio is no longer available to listeners via the Sky TV platform from the end of last week after the station’s owners QSoft decided against renewing its carriage deal with Sky. QSoft said the basis of its decision came from observing a “substantial decline” in its audience figures through the platform while simultaneously watching continual growth in audience listening via “DAB, online and on mobile phones”.

The owners believe that the move would allow Gaydar Radio to concentrate its resources on further developing its online offering. Robin Crowley, Gaydar head of radio, said: “With a drop in the numbers of listeners through the Sky platform and the convergence of TV and online we want to capitalise on the platforms our audience are telling us they prefer to use.”
